Why Self-Care is Important
When you’re stressed, over-worked, or feel like you’re engulfed in a tornado with tasks and deadlines floating around you, your interest in self-care might go out the window. Taking a few minutes to schedule exercise, sleep or prepare a nutritious meal might be compromised while you’re stressing out about something—you might even feel guilty about setting aside time for self-care.
It’s important for you to remember that you’re the greatest asset and without you, nothing can really get done. Not protecting your schedule or setting aside time for self-care can sabotage your entire efforts to be effective and fit for duty.
First of all, don’t think of yourself as a slacker or think that “rewarding yourself” with something nice (like a spa day) is a bad thing. Investing in yourself is a good thing. When you’re feeling anxious or stressed, you’re likely to rush through things, make erratic decisions or use that energy to burn through a task and risk burnout. Instead, acknowledge how you’re feeling and try to bring yourself into a more calm, rational and focused state.
Here are some reasons why self-care is important:
1. Self-care can help you avoid physical and mental burnout
Your body and mind need rest. Just like a car can overheat by pushing it non-stop, your body has the same way of reaching physical and mental exhaustion. It’s OK to stop for some breaks, have some snacks and make time to unwind and laugh. Your mind is the same way, so give it breaks to avoid burnout.
2. Self-care can help you focus and improve your mood
You need time to disconnect and let your mind wander. A walk, run or some exercise can help bring you back to center and help you get a fresh perspective and allow you to come back feeling in a better mood and with better focus.
3. Self-care can help you reduce stress
You can’t control life’s circumstances and what it will throw at you, but you can control how you react to it. You’re in control of your time and making time to nourish your mind, body and soul can keep you in good shape for handling stressful events. Self-care gives you the mental clarity and resilience to help you manage stressful moments in life.
Self-care is something that should be incorporated into your daily life and it will make you feel better prepared for stressful moments.
