7 Key Habits of Great Content Creators

March 23, 2021

There are some habits that successful and consistent creators practice.

Whether your goal is to paint, bake, write a book, do public speaking or share your portfolio online—you can start practicing some new habits that help you create and hone your craft.

If you’re feeling mental blocks due to self-imposed feelings of imposter syndrome, feeling like everyone has done what you’ve already done (and done it better), or feeling scared to take action and put yourself out there, you’re not alone.

➜ You can start by practicing some mental shifts and personal power habits that will help you flourish as a creator. Here are the seven key habits of great content creators.

1. Consume high-quality, well-researched content

Successful and consistent content creators immerse themselves in high-quality and well-researched content. This type of content helps them better understand complex topics or issues and helps them identify themes or common problems, which results in helping them formulate their own opinion on the topic or issue.

When they’re so well-versed on a topic, they can articulate it with clarity or practice and iterate their craft so well that it leads to mastery.

They read books, podcasts, watch videos, seek communities or groups, or take courses to help them better understand a topic in their field or niche.

They build a strong foundation of knowledge and can cut through the noise.

2. Research

Successful and consistent content creators read about their industry to stay on top of changes and trends. Over time, they start to develop a bird’s eye view of their industry and start to develop new ideas that help them innovate and stay ahead of the curve.

They research and consume content outside of their industry for inspiration and to remix and adapt new ideas.

They have no real time to lurk on their competitors because they’re too busy honing their own style. They have some awareness of what their competitors are doing, but don’t obsess over it because they don’t want to do the same thing as their competitors.

They follow their own style.

3. Review insights and analytics

Successful and consistent content creators make time to review their insights and analytics.

They track their engagement, audience growth and overall progress of their work.

They track their streaks, wins and lessons learned too.

As the saying goes, “What gets measured, gets managed” so be sure to make time to track your progress—even if that means starting off with counting your streaks.

4. Consistency

Successful and consistent creators practice consistency.

They remain consistent with their brand, style, messaging and with showing up. They take imperfect action.

They remain consistent with their voice, their authentic self and not a version they think they should be projecting.

Whatever you might be creating may not look perfect at the beginning, but over time, your consistent practice will lead to mastery.

Keep honing in on your style and practice consistency.

5. They KNOW their audience

Consistent creators know their audience.

This type of knowledge and clarity develops through research and through taking action.

For example, that bullet journaling account you might see on Instagram enjoys a certain genre of films and she knows her audience does too.

She isn’t afraid to talk about it and share her bullet journal spread dedicated to quotes and images from those films.

You can develop that type of audience insight too simply by taking action and connecting with your audience and asking them questions.

Get to know your audience as they get to know you!

6. Project Management System

Consistent and successful content creators have some type of project management system in place that helps them track and manage their goals and KPI’s.

They have a way of tracking their work so they can see their progress and growth over time and help them stay on track with their own goals and redirect their energy and strategy as needed.

They develop a method for their process through effective project management.

7. Continuous Improvement

Consistent and successful content creators practice continuous improvement.

They keep practicing their craft, questioning the status quo and reinventing themselves.

For example, know their first video will be cringey to look at someday, but they remain committed to the process over the long run.
